Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE-Academic) is a computer-based English language test. The test measures the language skills of test-takers in Universities, Colleges, Immigration, and work permits requiring an English standard of education.

Test Format
You should familiarize yourself with the structure of PTE Academic. For a better score, you need to know the format of the test and the types of questions you can expect.

Speaking & Writing
We will test your oral and written communication skills using English. This test takes 50-60 minutes and contains seven different questions. It is the most extended section of the test.
Reading
This part includes five different questions, which last around 30 minutes. Since PTE Academic is an integrated skills test, one item type (‘Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks’) also assesses writing skills.
Listening
The duration of this part is 30–43 minutes, and there are eight different types of questions.
- Questions include audio and video clips that play automatically.
- You hear each audio or video clip once. You are allowed to take notes.

PTE Academic tests are 100% machine-scored, which means that every question is marked accurately, consistently, and fairly. As a measure of English proficiency, each test taker has a scorecard between 10 and 90.
What are the scores for each question?
In some cases, questions are graded based on correctness, whereas in others, they are graded based on their formal aspects and quality.
- A formal aspect refers to the form of your response: for example, whether you are significantly over or under the word limit for a specific item type.
- Your ability to respond well depends on speaking fluently, pronouncing correctly, and understanding. This is what we call your ‘Skills Profile.’
